A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - EMILIA AND JÓZEF KALASANTY PAYGERT
“I’m Jewish” – said Anna Nizinek to the Paygerts, tears in her eyes. “Don’t even finish this sentence, my child. You have a home here” – answered Emilia, taking her by the hand. Józef hugged both women, adding: “We won’t let you die.” That’s how their life-long friendship began. The Paygerts lived in Podolia, in a lovely manor in Dynów. They managed very well. Even though the war stripped them of some of their estates and income, they never stopped supporting Anna, who managed to survive the war in their care. After the liberation, she married Shlomo Wolkowicz and left for Israel. She maintained close, friendly, familial relations with her saviours for the rest of her life.
